Zithromax (azithromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic prescribed for the treatment of bacteria-induced infections. This means that it can be used for sexually transmitted diseases but will not be efficient for the treatment of viral infections, such as cold and flu. Such drugs as phenytoin, digoxin, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, cyclosporine, nelfinavir, anticoagulants, terfenadine and some others can interfere with the efficiency of your treatment. To avoid drug interference you are not supposed to take any of these medicines with Zithromax. Make sure your health care provider knows your complete medical history before you start the treatment as some of your conditions may be contraindications while others will require a dose adjustment. Being pregnant or breastfeeding may prevent you from safely taking this medicine as it can harm an unborn baby. You should also tell your doctor about any medical conditions that can affect the efficiency of your treatment including liver or kidney disease, HIV, irregular heartbeat, cystic fibrosis or any other illnesses that may be important to mention.
